Q: What is the best application for NuLook?

A: The optimal application for NuLook is in reservoirs that are predominately primary porosity producers. These areas would include shaly sands, clean sands, and conventional intergranular limestones and dolomites where the reservoirs are systems which have clay and grain size effects. Establishing effective porosity, irreducible water fraction, and clay bound water fraction yields textured information which is then related to permeability and a reservoir quality understanding. This information is critical to accurate reserve estimates and producibility. It is far easier to list the few areas of limitations. Areas which have non-connected vugs such as oolmoldic porosity would limit the use of the permeability relationship which NuLook® utilizes. NuLook® does have a separate module for highly fractured carbonates which establishes a fracture density system that can be used to quantify and locate the intervals of greatest producibility.

 

Q: When only old logs are available in a given field, how can NuTech determine the current hydrocarbon saturation and can NuLook assist?

A: The primary objective on old wells would be to identify, quantify, and risk assess any by-passed pay which has yet to be completed. In order to perform a time lapse evaluation of hydrocarbons in a primary or secondary recovery situation, it would be necessary to run a NuLook® analysis on the original log data. After NuTech® computes and normalizes with NuLooks™, a pulse neutron log would be needed to characterize the current saturations in the well bore. Using this analysis in a number of wells in a field can yield a three dimensional characterization of the movement of hydrocarbons and the locations where additional hydrocarbons remain. Finally, using this information, recompletions can be recommended as well as additional new drill well locations.

Q: Does NuTech need NMR data in each field to calibrate the model?

A: Initially the answer to this question was yes, but now after several years of model enhancements and experience, NMR is much less critical and in a majority of the basins not necessary. However, in introductions to new clients, we do see NMR data utilized for establishing further confidence with validation.

 

Q: How does NuLook compute accurate Rw values?

A: NuLook® utilizes a unique textural balancing system to determine Rw continuously and consistently. This system allows the analyst to iterate through a set of data to establish a more balanced bulk volume water and bulk volume irreducible. The key to this process is getting the entire data set to balance including new endpoints set in the silt volume of the shale, leading to Rw determination.

 

Q: What is the price compared to actually running an NMR tool?

A: Price comparison of the NuLook® process and an actual NMR run can vary depending on land, off-shore, or international. NMR logging is priced anywhere from $14,000 to $30,000 or more per well depending on well depth, intervals, location, etc. For 1,000 feet of NuLook® evaluation, the price can be as low as 5 percent of an NMR log but always a fraction of the total cost of running the actual log. NuTech® also offers pricing tiers for multi-well project work which provides significant additional savings to our clients.

 

Q: Does NuLook® utilize other information collected on a well such as core, pressure test, DST, production data, or mudlog in the evaluation?

A: The NuLook® system is designed to incorporate all available information collected on a well to ensure nothing is overlooked and to verify the accuracy of the evaluation. Aside from the convenience of viewing the data in one document, this approach has contributed to NuTech's extremely high success rate in evaluating pay.
